Decatur Island

Here is a Private island. Decatur is one of the San Juan Islands but not reachable by the Washington State Ferry. You have to be invited and then you take a charter or your own boat out to the island. We took the Paraclete Charter Boat out of Anacortes. We went on March 24th to see Kay and Jim. Kay was my first boss at Overlake and invited us out for a lovely adventure. If you look at a map it is one of the closer islands to Anacortes and the islanders like the relative privacy the lack of state ferry service provides them. We were struck by the effort of life there, as compared to our relative ease. If we don’t have something we can easily go to the store but there they have no store (most of the year, it’s open some hours in the summer and presently for sale). As for intentional, you are responsible for your trash, for taking off the island as well. Yet in this more intentional living there is a greater investment in helping others and knowing others. You’ll notice the old cars becoming a part of nature. Once brought here they need to be barged out when no longer useful, at a greater expense. Part of the island is a group of residences that has roaming sheep. They don’t allow cars, but people get around their homes with golf carts.
